Favorite Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

I've been baking this Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookie recipe for several years.

It makes large Oatmeal Cookies that are thick, crisp, and chewy and remains one of my favorite Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipes, because it has brought me good luck.

I first made oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips with this recipe when I wanted to make homemade cookies for one of my favorite teachers back in massage school.

I was nervous about my first practical massage exam, and decided to alleviate my stress by baking cookies. (Baking is one of my favorite ways to relax.)

Guess what kind of cookies were my teacher's favorites? Yep, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip! Who could have guessed?

She loved the homemade still warm from the oven oatmeal cookies and I got a great score on my first practical massage exam! Coincidence? Maybe.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies combine two of America's favorite cookies—the oatmeal cookie and the chocolate chip cookie—into one.

If you already have a favorite oatmeal cookie recipe, you can turn it into a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie by adding a cup or two of chocolate chips before baking.

If you like your cookies less sweet, you can decrease the granulated sugar by 1/4 cup, but the cookies will be a little less crispy as a result!

Cookie Baking Tip
For best results, always bake your cookies one baking sheet at a time in the center of your oven. If you are short on time and need to bake bake two cookie sheets at once, position one of your oven racks in the center and one in the lower portion of your oven. Halfway through the baking time, switch the cookie sheets from top to bottom and also rotate them front to back so they will bake more evenly.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened but still firm
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  1. Position one of your oven racks in the center. Preheat your oven to 350F degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl mix the flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg together until well blended and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl beat the butter with an electric mixer until it is creamy.
  4. Add the sugars and beat until the mixture becomes fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each one.
  6. Beat in the vanilla.
  7. Stir the flour mixture into the butter-sugar mixture with a wooden spoon.
  8. Stir in the oats and chocolate chips until they are distributed throughout the dough.
  9. Form the dough into 2-inch balls and position on the cookie sheets at least 2 inches apart. (You should have about 18 balls of dough distributed between 2 cookie sheets.)
  10. Bake until the cookies edges are golden brown, about 22 to 25 minutes.
  11. Remove from the oven and transfer the cookies with a spatula to wire racks to cool completely.

Testimonials

"I have been researching and trying a number of recipes to make a healthy cookie similar to one that our Gym coffee shop sells for $3.50! This particular recipe was adapted so instead of bars I made thick round cookies and cooked them just underdone so they were soft and chewy. They were a hit with all the girls. Thanks for the great recipe."
